Cemetery Guide

Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

Purchasing a gravestone for a New Jersey cemetery requires knowledge of that cemetery's regulations. Size limits, permitted materials, base requirements, and approved finishes vary by cemetery and sometimes by section within a cemetery. Gravestone Shop confirms these specifications at every cemetery where we install before the design is finalized. This ensures the stone that arrives at the cemetery meets every requirement — no revisions, no rejection, no delays.

Foundation Requirements

Gravestones for sale in New Jersey require proper foundation installation to comply with cemetery standards and ensure long-term stability. Upright headstones require concrete footings extending below the frost line — typically 30 to 42 inches. Gravestone Shop handles foundation preparation as part of every sale and installation. Our crew coordinates with cemetery staff, prepares the footing, and sets the stone. The family needs only one company for the entire process.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Jewish, Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant cemeteries throughout New Jersey each maintain specific guidelines for gravestone materials, dimensions, and design elements. Gravestone Shop's craftsmen have produced faith-specific monuments in each tradition for decades. Inscriptions in Hebrew, Russian Cyrillic, and Polish Latin are carved in-house. Every faith-specific requirement is incorporated into the design and confirmed with the cemetery before production begins.

Headstones for Sale

Gravestones for sale at Gravestone Shop represent a different kind of purchase than buying a product from a catalog. There is no off-the-shelf inventory at our Morris County workshop. Every stone begins with a consultation — a conversation between our designers and the family about the person being memorialized, the design direction, the cemetery's requirements, and the family's wishes. From that conversation, a scaled design proof is produced and reviewed. Revisions are made until the design is right. Then, and only then, does carving begin. What is for sale at Gravestone Shop is the result of that process: a custom-carved, American-made granite memorial that will stand in a New Jersey cemetery for generations. The range of what is available is the full range of gravestone forms: single and companion uprights, flat and flush-to-grade stones, slant-top markers, pillow-style markers, and custom commissions. All are carved by hand in our Morris County workshop by craftsmen who have refined this skill over 80 years. Every gravestone we sell is one we have made ourselves — no outsourced carving, no imported stone.

Granite Options

American-made granite is the foundation of every Gravestone Shop gravestone for sale. Our material inventory includes classic gray granite, polished black granite, rose granite, and mahogany granite. Each color has distinct visual properties: black granite carries engraved portraits with exceptional clarity; gray and mahogany granites provide warmth suited to traditional monuments; rose granite adds individuality. Surface finishes — fully polished, honed, or rock-faced — are selected in consultation with the family and confirmed against the cemetery's requirements. All materials are domestic.

Custom Design Process

Every gravestone sold by Gravestone Shop comes with a complete process: design consultation, scaled proof, material confirmation, hand-carving, finishing, inspection, delivery, foundation preparation, and installation. Families purchase a completed, installed memorial — not a stone that requires additional contractors or separate arrangements. This complete process is part of what Gravestone Shop sells. It is the reason that families who worked with us for a first gravestone return for companion stones, and why families recommend us to others. The 80 years our Morris County workshop has been in continuous operation represent 80 years of families finding this kind of complete, accountable service.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Gravestone Shop's six-step gravestone production process ensures that every stone sold by our Morris County workshop is produced and installed correctly. Step one is consultation: a conversation with the family to gather all necessary information — the person being memorialized, the cemetery's requirements, and the design preferences. Step two is design proofing: a scaled visual proof is created showing inscription layout, imagery, stone shape, dimensions, and finish — reviewed by the family and refined until approved. Step three is material confirmation: American-made granite is selected by color and finish and confirmed against cemetery regulations. Step four is hand-carving: craftsmen in our Morris County workshop execute every element of the design by hand, using chisels and engraving tools. Letters, portraits, symbols, and borders are all carved this way — not cut by machine. Step five is finishing and inspection: the stone is treated, cleaned, and reviewed by a senior craftsman before delivery. Step six is installation: our team coordinates with the cemetery, prepares the concrete foundation, and sets the stone. Over 80 years of continuous operation in New Jersey, and service to families in English, Russian, and Polish.
